CE25401:
Strength
of Materials II
Course
Objective:
The
course imparts knowledge on energy methods for deflection analysis, and equips
students to analyse indeterminate beams, columns, and pressure vessels. It also
develops understanding of three-dimensional stress, failure theories, and advanced
bending in curved and unsymmetrical members.
Energy
Methods, and Deflection Analysis: Strain energy (axial
load, shear, flexure, torsion) - Castigliano’s theorems, Maxwell’s reciprocal
theorem, principle of virtual work, unit load method - deflection of
determinate beams, frames, and trusses.
Activity:
Seminar on energy methods for deflection analysis.
Indeterminate
Beams: Analysis of propped cantilever, fixed and
continuous beams; fixed end moments, theorem of three moments, analysis of
continuous beams, sinking of supports.
Activity:
Quiz on analysis methods and bending moment diagrams.
Columns:
Euler’s theory, Rankine-Gordon formula, eccentrically loaded columns; middle
third rule.
Pressure
Vessels: Thin and thick cylinders and spheres,
compound thick cylinders, Shrinking on stresses.
Activity:
Flipped classroom on column theories with problem-solving.
3D
Stress, Failure Theories: Stress components,
principal stresses, stress invariants, and failure theories.
Activity:
Poster presentation on failure theories and stress states.
Advanced
Bending, Curved Structures: Unsymmetrical bending,
curved beams, Winkler-Bach theory, Stresses in links and hooks.
Activity:
Model making to demonstrate bending and curved beam behavior.
Weightage:
Continuous Assessment: 40%, End Semester Examinations: 60%
Methodology for Continuous Assessment: Quiz - 10%, Poster presentation - 15%; Seminar report – 10%; Model making – 15%; Internal Examinations – 50%
