Brief, sudden involuntary stereotyped purposeless movement involving the muscles of the face, extremities and trunk

Tics

 

·        Brief, sudden involuntary stereotyped purposeless movement involving the muscles of the face, extremities and trunk

·        Worsens with anxiety

·        May be able to be controlled for a short while

·        Go away in sleep

·        If florid, look like repeated myoclonic seizures

·        Chronic Motor Tics:

o   Goes on for more than a year

o   Life long tendency

·        Chronic Multiple Tics:

o   = Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome

o   Onset usually 2 – 15 years

o   Boys > girls

o   Tendency for life

o   Multiple motor and vocal tics which wax and wane

·        Wide spectrum from minor ® severe
