·        Definition: > 5 RBC in high powered microscope field


·        Categories:

o  Gross/Macroscopic:

§  UTI (most common cause by far)

§  Trauma: visceral damage easier in kids

§  Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis

§  Stones

§  Wilm‟s tumour

§  Bleeding disorder (eg haemophilia)

§  Red food colourings (eg beetroot)

§  IgA nephropathy: IgA deposits on glomeruli


o  Acute microscopic:

§  Infection 

§  Plus above list (which are more likely to be microscopic than macroscopic, and may be intermittent/chronic)
