·        Family concerns:

o  What is an autopsy – like a major operation

o  Will my child be cut – yes

o  When will it be done – soon

o  How long will it take – max 3 hours 

o  What will my baby look like afterwards – won‟t see chest incision if dressed. Vertical cut down back of head 

o  Can I take my baby home afterwards – yes

·        Autopsy may provide:

o  A cause of death – but may take time

o  Identify unacceptable iatrogenic lesions

o  Quality control for a neonatal unit

o  Assist medical knowledge

o  Information that may help other babies

·        Common reasons for refusal:

o   Concerns about disfigurement and further suffering

o   Lack of information

o   Objections from family members

o   Religious beliefs

o   Interference with funeral arrangements

·        Must refer to the coroner:

o   Where death certificates cannot be signed

o   Thought to be related to an invasive procedure

o   ?Birth asphyxia

o   Deaths thought to be related to an instrumental delivery
