·        Damage to large vessels in the eye

·        Occlusion of the central retinal artery:

o  Due to atheroma, thrombus, embolis, arteritis

o  Retina is white and totally infracted

·        Occlusion of the central retinal vein:

o  Haemorrhagic infarction

o  Collateral supply means some vision is recoverable

o  Retina is a mass of red, veins big and tortuous, cotton wool spots
