REOVIRUSES
The reoviruses (respiratory enteric orphans) are
naked virions that contain segmented, double-stranded RNA and replicate in the
cytoplasm of infected cells. They are ubiquitous and have been found in humans,
simians, rodents, cattle, and a variety of other hosts. They have been studied
in great detail as experimental models, revealing much basic knowledge about viral
genetics and pathogenesis at the molecular level. Three serotypes are known to
infect humans; however, their role and importance in human disease remain
uncertain.
