Dysuria

Definition

Dysuria is the sensation of burning or stinging on passing urine.

This is usually caused by a urinary tract infection and is frequently accompanied by increased urinary frequency and increased urgency (a sudden urge to pass urine). There may be accompanying fever, and systemic upset such as nausea and vomiting, although these are less common with simple cystitis, compared to cystitis complicated by prostatitis, pyelonephritis or obstruction.

It can also be caused after instrumentation of the urinary tract, e.g. by a catheter or cystoscopy, and by urethritis (sexually transmitted diseases causing an inflamed urethra).
