QUALITY MANAGEMENT
Risk management and continuous quality
improve-ment programs at the departmental level may reduce anesthetic morbidity
and mortality rates by addressing monitoring standards, equipment, practice
guidelines, continuing education, quality of care, and staffing issues.
Specific responsibilities of peer review committees include identifying (and,
ideally, preventing) potential problems, formulat-ing and periodically revising
departmental policies, ensuring the availability of properly functioning
anesthetic equipment, enforcing standards required for clinical privileges, and
evaluating the appro-priateness and quality of patient care. A quality improvement
system impartially and continuously reviews complications, compliance with
standards, and quality indicators.
