Helicobacter are Campylobacter-like bacteria with a spiral or helical morphology. They are motile by means of sheathed flagella.Helicobacter spp. inhabit stomach of humans and many othermammals, such as monkeys, dogs, cats, ferrets, mice, etc. The genusHelicobacter consists of many species, which are associ-ated with human diseases (Table 36-3). Of these, Helicobacterpylori,Helicobacter cinaedi, and Helicobacter fennelliae are threeimportant species that cause human infections.
The association of H. pylori with gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid type (MALT), and B-cell lymphoma is recognized worldwide.
