This may be due to long-term illness (710%). In many situations the absence from school may be the result of poor provision of extra support in class and/or information and training of the school staff. CFS is an important cause of school absence. Absence due to school refusal has a wide range of contributory factors.

In most cases a thorough medical assessment is needed to ascertain the cause of chronic or recurrent school absence. When it is thought appro-priate, home tuition can be provided until the child returns to school.
