Intestinal Worms

·        Hookworm:

o  Ancylostoma duodenale, necator americanus

o  Diagnosis: stool sample * 3

·        Roundworm:

o  Ascaris Lumbricoides

o  Diagnosis: worms passed in faeces, or stool samples * 3 and examine for Ova

·        Pinworm:

o  Enterobius vermicularis

o  Diagnosis: sellotape swabs of anus

·        Whipworm:

o   Trichuris trichura

o   Diagnosis: stools * 3 

·        Treatment: medendazole 100mg BD for 3 days for Hookworm, Roundworm, Pinworm (treat whole family) and whipworm (only if severe)

·        Strongyloides Stercoralis:

o   Diagnosis: Stools * 3

o   Treatment: Thiabendazole

·        Tapeworms:

o   Taenia saginata, beef tapeworm

o   Diagnosis: Stools * 3, examine for worm segments

o   Treatment: niclosamide
