Amoebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica)

·        Diagnosis:

o  Intestinal amoebiasis: stool sample * 3, 48 hours apart, in PVA fixative

o  Cysts: frequently present asymptomatically (carrier state)

o  Extra-intestinal amoebiasis (eg amoebic abscess of the liver) maybe months later. Serum antibody test

·        Treatment:

o  Intestinal amoebiasis: metronidazole then diloxanide furoate

o  Extra-intestinal: metronidazole (surgical drainage may be necessary)

o  Asymptomatic: Diloxanide furoate
