Dexamethasone

Postoperative Nausea & Vomiting PONV

DEXAMETHASONE

Dexamethasone (Decadron) in doses as small as 4 mg has been shown to be as effective as ondan-setron in reducing the incidence of PONV. Dexamethasone should be given at induction as opposed to the end of surgery, and its mechanism of action is unclear. There appear to be no signifi-cant or long-lasting systemic effects from this dose of glucocorticoid.
