Autistic Disorder and MMR
Vaccinations
Some have suggested that there is a variant of ASD
called autistic enterocolitis that
involves developmental regression and
gastrointestinal symptoms, and that this variant is a conse-quence of
measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) immunization. This hypothesis, which has been
postulated to account for the rise in the number of cases of ASD, suggests that
there are specific biological findings in these children that result from a
persistent measles viral infection. At the current time, investigations into
this hypothesis have shown no relationship between MMR vacci-nations and the
development of ASD; this lack of evidence argues against changes in MMR
vaccination programs.
