In the sitting position, patients generally find it easier to flex the spine and thereby enlarge the interlaminar space. This position helps prevent rotation or distortion of the vertebral bodies. In obese patients, the midline is not obscured by fat pads rolling over it, as occurs in the lateral decubitus position.
