In the United States, the lateral decubitus position is used most commonly for several reasons. Some patients, depend-ing on their medical condition, may be unable to sit up. The heavily sedated patient may be at risk of falling if in the sitting position. Also, the lateral decubitus position reduces the potential for dural puncture syncope, which is a loss of consciousness during dural penetration.
