What are
the advantages of the lateral decubitus position for placing a subarachnoid
block?
In the United States, the lateral decubitus
position is used most commonly for several reasons. Some patients, depend-ing
on their medical condition, may be unable to sit up. The heavily sedated
patient may be at risk of falling if in the sitting position. Also, the lateral
decubitus position reduces the potential for dural puncture syncope, which is a
loss of consciousness during dural penetration.
