Production of sound
In your daily life you
hear different sounds from different sources. But have you ever thought how
sound is produced? To understand the production of sound, let us do some
activities.
When you strike the
tuning fork on the rubber pad, it starts vibrating. That’s what you feel with
your fingers. These vibrations cause the nearby molecules to vibrate.
From the above
activities we see that vibrations are produced when some mechanical work is
done. Vibration is nothing but to and fro movement of a particle. Thus,
mechanical energy vibrates an object and when these vibrations reach our ear we
hear the sound. At the end of this chapter, we will study how our ear senses
sound.
