Currently, there is no effective vaccine available against N. gonorrhoeae. Chemoprophylaxis by the prophylactic use ofpenicillin is also ineffective and may promote the development of resistant strains. Therefore, (a) health education, (b) early detection of cases, (c) tracing of contacts, and (d) follow-up of screening of sexual contacts is important in the prevention of gonorrheal epidemics. Furthermore, the prevention of gonor-rhea involves the promotion of safe sex and individual counsel-ing. Gonococcal conjunctivitis in the newborns is prevented by using erythromycin ointment.
