Gastritis is inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which can be considered as acute or chronic and by the under-lying pathology (see Fig. 4.6).

 

There is little correlation between the degree of inflammation and symptomatology. Patients may complain of epigastric burning pain and occasionally vomiting. Endoscopy can be performed to confirm the diagnosis but is rarely indicated in acute gastritis.
