Cetrimide (atrimonium bromide) is a quaternary ammonium compound. It is commonly used as a disinfectant. Common Indian preparations of cetrimide include Cetavlon (20% solu-tion), Cetrilak (5% solution), and Savlon (15% solution with 7.5% chlorhexidine*).Ingestion of cetrimide causes gastrointestinal irritation with vomiting. Systemic effects include a curare-like paralysis (because of depolarising neuromuscular blocking action), CNS depression, hypotension, and respiratory failure.
Usual fatal dose is said to be about 3 grams.
