How is CDH diagnosed?

The diagnosis of CDH may be made prenatally or postnatally. With the increased use of ultrasonography in the pre-natal period, the prenatal diagnosis of CDH is more common. A poor prognosis can be anticipated if polyhy-dramnios is present, the fetal stomach is visualized in the tho-rax, or if the diagnosis is made prior to 20 weeks gestation.

Postnatally, the diagnosis should be considered if the above clinical features are present. The definitive diagnosis is made by chest radiograph showing abdominal contents in the thoracic cavity.
