Aim: provide information for an individual/couple to make informed choices about their reproductive options, and to assist them in coming to terms with the options they face

· Requires:

o Diagnostic precision

o Estimation of risk: either Mendelian or multifactorial (eg cardiac abnormalities, neural tube defects, etc)

o The likely burden of care for a child with the disorder: variability, life expectancy, quality of life, treatment

o Alternatives: childless life style, adoption, intrauterine diagnosis, donor sperm, donor ova
