CHAPTER 21
Exploring NIO
Beginning
with version 1.4, Java has provided a second I/O system called NIO (which is short for New I/O). It supports a buffer-oriented, channel-based approach to
I/O operations. With the release of JDK 7, the NIO system was greatly expanded,
providing enhanced support for file-handling and file system features. In fact,
so significant were the changes that the term NIO.2 is often used. Because of the capabilities supported by the
NIO file classes, NIO is expected to become an increasingly important approach
to file handling. This chapter explores several of the key features of the NIO
system.
