In situations where the blood pressure is severely or acutely elevated, the differential diagnosis should include the possibility of pheochromocytoma. Other conditions that can cause this include severe essential hypertension, preeclampsia of pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, intracranial hypertension, withdrawal of certain antihypertensive agents, or exogenous administration of vasopressor medications resulting from a drug-swap.
