Safety Measures on Indian Railways
Indian Railways gives high
priority to safety in train operation and this has helped in minimizing train
accidents. Some of the important safety measures taken by the Railways are
listed below. These measures are regularly reviewed by the railway administration
and new measures are adopted based on these reviews as well as on the
recommendations of the Commission of Railway Safety and the departmental
enquiry committees.
(a) Rehabilitation
of assets such as tracks, bridges, and rolling stock.
(b) Inspections
of signalling gear, wagons, and locomotive maintenance depots and quality
checks of workshop products.
(c) Monitoring
the training and performance of the operational staff.
(d) Counselling
the drivers about their driving techniques.
(e) Extension
of technical aids, i.e., auxiliary warning system, axle counters, route relay
interlocking, and track circuiting.
(f) Surprise
checks to verify that no inflammable or explosive substances are being carried
on passenger trains.
(g) Providing
whistle boards/speed breakers and road signs at unmanned level crossings and
making provisions to improve visibility for drivers.
(h) Audio-visual
publicity to educate road users on how to safely use level crossings.
(i) Holding
disaster management courses for staff and officers in training institutes.
(j) Making the safety of the Railways a multi-disciplinary affair for effectiveness.
