POLYOMAVIRUSES
VIROLOGY
The
polyomaviruses include the JC virus (JCV) and BK virus (BKV) of humans and
simian virus 40 (SV40) of monkeys. Polyomaviruses, like papillomaviruses, are
members of the papovavirus family. They are also double-stranded, naked capsid
DNA viruses and are widely distributed among various animal species, usually
without causing apparent disease. However, they are able to transform cells of
a variety of heterologous cell lines in culture.
