NONDEPOLARIZING NEUROMUSCULAR BLOCKADE

 

60-year-old, 60 kg woman with colon carcinoma, a history of temporal arteritis, and mitral valve prolapse presents for hemicolectomy. She is otherwise in good health. Her medications included prednisone 40 mg orally every day, ampicillin 2 g intravenously every 6 hours, and gentamicin 80 mg intravenously every 12 hours. She received pancuronium 4 mg intravenously at the beginning of the procedure. Two hours later, no twitches are visible on train-of-four monitoring.
