On-site methods such as ground filtration and constructed wetlands may also be used for inactivation of micro-organisms. Put simply, naturally occurring micro-organisms in the on-site systems destroy the pathogenic micro-organisms in the water. It is important to have adequate residence time in the systems to ensure that pathogenic micro-organisms are destroyed.
