All of the agents indicated in Table 69 – 1 as causing prenatal infections have the potential of creating an adverse pregnancy outcome, either as a result of compromising the health of the mother or by directly affecting the fetus. The effect can be untimely termination of pregnancy resulting in abortion, stillbirth, or prematurity, as well as developmental de-fects and fetal malnutrition.
