Platelet count decreases by approximately 20% during a normal pregnancy. This decrease does not generally affect the ability to place an epidural anesthetic. However, approximately 7% of all parturients will present with a platelet count < 150,000 mm3 and 0.5–1% will present with a platelet count < 100,000 mm3.
