Cell Wall Components and Antigenic Structure

On the basis of direct immunofluorescence and slide aggluti-nation tests, a total of 15 serogroups (1–15) of L. pneumophila have been identified. Of these, three serogroups (1, 4, and 6) are primarily associated with human disease.

Nearly, 80% of the cases of legionellosis disease caused by L. pneumophila are believed due to serogroup 1. L. pneumophila possesses both flagellar and somatic antigens.
