Where and what kind of steroids are naturally produced?

The adrenal cortex produces three different classes of steroids built from the basic cholesterol molecule. These three classes are glucocorticosteroids (cortisol), mineralo-corticoids (aldosterone) and androgens (testosterone). The adrenal medulla produces catecholamines via an entirely different metabolic pathway starting with the amino acid tyrosine and under different neurohumoral control.
