Chapter: Clinical Cases in Anesthesia : Open-Eye Injury And Intraocular Pressure

What non-anesthetic agents might the ophthalmolo-gist use to maximize surgical outcome?

Intravenous acetazolamide will also lower IOP.

What non-anesthetic agents might the ophthalmolo-gist use to maximize surgical outcome?

Intravenous agents, such as mannitol, dextran, urea, as well as oral glycerol, will increase plasma osmotic pressure, decrease aqueous humor formation, and reduce IOP (Table 43.2). Intravenous acetazolamide will also lower IOP. Acetazolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase and there-fore interferes with the sodium pump responsible for aqueous humor formation.
