What is the incidence of nonobstetric surgery in the pregnant
patient?
The incidence of nonobstetric surgery during
pregnancy is between 0.3% and 2%. There are approximately 3.5 million
deliveries per year in the United States, which means that between 10,000 and
70,000 pregnant patients will require sur-gery. This may be an underestimate due
to surgery performed prior to clinical recognition of pregnancy. Appendectomy
is the most common nonobstetric operation during pregnancy. However, almost
every type of surgical procedure has been successfully performed in the
pregnant patient, including open-heart procedures with cardiopulmonary bypass,
neuro-surgical procedures requiring hypotensive techniques and hypothermia, and
liver transplantation.
