What is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)?
PHN is the development of severe pain in the area where an acute herpes zoster infection occurred. There is much debate about the precise definition of PHN, specifi-cally at what point the disease changes from acute herpes zoster to PHN. Some state that pain which remains 4 weeks after the onset of lesions is PHN, while others state that pain in the area after the lesions have healed is PHN.
