What are
the risk factors for regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration under general
anesthesia?
General anesthesia is associated with the loss
of protective upper airway reflexes. Therefore, a patient who regurgitates
under a general anesthetic is at risk for aspirating the regurgitant. Any
condition associated with an increase in intragastric volume and intragastric
pressure may result in regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration (Table 34.1)
