A  total  knee  arthroplasty  allows  for  several  different types of  anesthesia and all of  the following are acceptable choices:


·  General anesthesia

 

· Neuraxial anesthesia Spinal Epidural

 

Combined spinal/epidural (CSE)

·  Regional anesthesia

 

Femoral nerve block (psoas compartment block) in combination with a sciatic nerve block

·  Combinations of the above

e.g., general anesthesia and femoral nerve block.

 

The type of anesthesia chosen will depend on the anes-thesiologist’s evaluation of the patient’s condition and personal preference, the surgeon’s needs, and the patient’s preference.
