POISONING SEVERITY SCORE
The European Association of Clinical
Poison Centres and Clinical Toxicologists has proposed a guide for
scoringseverity, applicable to cases of acute poisoning in both adults and
children. As per this system, there are basi-cally 4 grades of severity:
None (0)—Nil/Minimal signs or symptoms
Minor (1)—Mild, transient and spontaneously resolvingsymptoms
Moderate (2)—Pronounced or prolonged symptoms Severe (3)—Severe or life-threatening symptoms
In minor poisoning, symptomatic and
supportive treatment is generally not required, whereas this normally is the
case for moderate poisoning. In severe poisoning, advanced sympto-matic and
supportive treatment is always necessary.
