CARCINOID
SYNDROME
A 38-year-old
woman presents with flushing, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Her past medical
history is pertinent for ectopic pregnancy and hypothyroidism. Colonoscopy reveals
a mass in the ileocolic region and increased levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic
acid (5-HIAA) are found in the urine. A presumptive diagnosis of carcinoid
syndrome is made and the patient admitted for laparotomy.
