A 38-year-old woman presents with flushing, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

CARCINOID SYNDROME

A 38-year-old woman presents with flushing, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Her past medical history is pertinent for ectopic pregnancy and hypothyroidism. Colonoscopy reveals a mass in the ileocolic region and increased levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are found in the urine. A presumptive diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome is made and the patient admitted for laparotomy.
