AMEBIC LIVER ABSCESS
Amebic liver abscess is rare in the United States
except in those who have traveled to/from tropical areas with
poor sanitation. The causative organism is Entamoeba
histolytica . The presentation, which
may occur years after travel, includes RUQ pain, fever, and hepatic tenderness.
Detection of a space-occupying
liver lesion with positive serology is diagnostic.
Treatment is antibiotics.
Drainage is rarely necessary.
