Sedative and hypnotic drugs
Sedatives reduce anxiety, tension, or excitement. Some
degree ofdrowsiness commonly accompanies sedative use.
When given in large doses, sedatives are considered
hypnotics, which induce a state resembling natural sleep. The three main
classes of synthetic drugs used as sedatives and hypnotics are:
·
benzodiazepines
·
barbiturates
·
nonbenzodiazepine-nonbarbiturate drugs.
Other sedatives may include sedating
antidepressants, such as tra-zodone, and over-the-counter sleep aids.
