Classification of transient over
voltages:
Transient
over voltages can be classified into two broad categories:
o Impulsive transient
o
Oscillatory transient
1. Impulsive transient:
ü An
impulsive transient is a sudden non power frequency change in the steady state
condition of the voltage or current waveforms that is essentially in one
direction either positive or negative with respect to those waveforms.
2. Oscillatory transient:
ü A sudden,
non power frequency change in the steady state condition of voltage or current
that is bidirectional in polarity.
ü An
oscillatory transient is a sudden non power frequency change in the steady
state condition of the voltage or current waveforms that is essentially in both
directions positive and negative with respect to those waveforms.
