CALCIUM METABOLISM

A 68-year-old man presents for elective parathy-roidectomy. The patient was diagnosed with parathyroid adenoma after a blood test in preparation for elective cataract surgery revealed hypercalcemia. Further blood tests demonstrated an elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) level, and technetium-sestamibi scans showed hyperactivity in the right lower gland. The patient also has a history of well controlled hypertension.
