The incidence of complications in the PACU is surprisingly high. A review of over 18,000 PACU admissions in a university hospital showed an overall complication rate of 26%, the most common being PONV (9.8%). Other com-plications are the need for airway support (6.9%), hypoten-sion (2.7%), dysrhythmias (1.4%), hypertension (1.1%), altered mental status (0.6%), rule-out myocardial infarction (0.3%), and major cardiac events (0.3%). Another review of 120 incidents occurring in the PACU found that two-thirds were related to respiratory complications.
