What procedures are amenable to the laparoscopic technique?

Since the late 1980s, less invasive surgical methods have taken the place of traditional “open” operations, signi-ficantly reducing the risks of morbidity and mortality. These new procedures are being performed on patients of all ages. They do not come without a price, however; altered changes in cardiovascular and pulmonary dynam-ics are inherent in the laparoscopic approach and the benefits must be weighed against the risks. Awareness of the physiologic changes that occur during laparoscopy will enable us to further improve the outcomes of these operations.

The following is a list of the most commonly performed laparoscopic surgical procedures:

Intra-abdominal:

· Cholecystectomy

· Vagotomy

· Appendectomy

· Colectomy

· Inguinal hernia repair

· Adrenalectomy

· Nephrectomy

· Prostatectomy

· Pancreatectomy

· Bariatric surgery

·           Nissen fundoplication

· Para-esophageal hernia repair

· Splenectomy

· Liver resection

· Cystectomy with ileal conduit

Gynecologic

· Ectopic pregnancy

· Ovarian cystectomy

· Reversal of ovarian torsion

· Salpingo-oophorectomy

· Hysterectomy

· Myomectomy

· Sacrocolpopexy

· Lymphadenectomy, staging
