Although it has been argued that most instances of postwith-drawal depression will spontaneously remit within a few days to several weeks there are still a substantial number of patients whose severe and persistent depression requires treatment. Given the superior safety profile of SSRIs, particularly in relation to risk of suicide by medication overdose, use of these drugs is prefer-able to the use of TCAs.
