In recent years studies of floral parts using scanning electron microscopy have added greatly to out understanding of the evolution of flowers. Small, fossilised flowers have been extensively studied. Developmental studies have helped separate analogous from homologous parts. Such characters as floral nectaries have been clarified by combined studies using SEM and thin sections for light microscopy. The further reading list has examples.
