The most common retrobulbar optic nerve tumors are gliomas and mening-iomas. Symptomsinclude a usually slow loss of visual acuity with exophthal-mos. Ophthalmoscopy will reveal descending primary atrophy of the optic nerve. Meningioma of the sheath of the optic nerve is typically accompanied by the formation of opticociliary shunt vessels with compression of the central retinal vessels.
