Make Water Denser
You will need: Fresh egg, jug, and water, salt.
As we have seen in a previous experiment, although ice and water are really the same, they have such different densities that ice will float in water. Here is an experiment which shows you how it is possible to increase the density of water and thereby improve its floating powers.
Place a fresh egg in a jug of clean water and the egg will sink to the bottom. In fact, your mother knows that this is one way of testing an egg to see if it is fresh, without having to open it.
Stir salt into the jug of water (about an egg cupful of salt to half a pint of water). Replace the egg and this time it will float because you have increased the density of the water.
If you still have your block of ice intact, float this in the salt water and you will notice that more of the ice shows above the brine than when it floated in fresh water.
If you are a swimmer, you have noticed how much easier it is to swim in the sea-provided it is calm- than in fresh water. Why should this be?
