Iso enzymes
Certain enzymes may exist in two or more forms
which have the same catalytic activity but are distinct physically, chemically
and electrophoretically. These forms exist in different tissues.
Example
a. Lactate dehydrogenase exist in 5 different
iso enzymic forms LD1, LD2, LD3, LD4, LD5 and perform the same function of the
conversion of lactate to pyruvate. LD1 is predominant in heart and LD5 in
muscle and liver.
b. Creatine kinase exist in 3 different iso
enzymic forms BB, MM and MB. These isoenzymes perform the same function of
conversion of creatine to creatine phosphate.
BB form exist in brain, MM form in muscle and
MB form in heart.
